Increased attractiveness and usage of Midtbyen is a shared goal for most stakeholders. However, since 2017, Midtbyen has experienced a steady decline in visitors, with significant implications for local commerce. Reduced mobility to and within the city center is highlighted as a key factor in this trend, and the Trondheim Business Association (NiT) identifies the lack of data as a major challenge. "Through traffic" is a central concept in the Urban Growth Agreement and influences political decisions. NiT describes it as "given and untouchable," making it difficult to measure accurately.
E.C. Dahls Eiendom aims to actively contribute to positive urban development. As part of this, they wanted to engage an interdisciplinary team of students to support key decision-makers with a fact-based data foundation for better urban development. In this project, the students created an overview of political decisions and explored to what extent these measures have had the desired impact on sustainability, considering costs and other implications for the city center.
The students delivered a report including the following:
📝 Political measures
Overview of political measures impacting the city center through the Urban Growth Agreement.
🅿 Parking capacity
Visual overview of parking capacity in and near the city center.
🚗 Through traffic
Weaknesses of current measurement methods and indication of actual through traffic.
🌍 Effect
What measurable effect have the measures had on sustainability and other goals in the Urban Growth Agreement?
